A respirator is a device designed to protect the wearer from inhaling particulate matter. This includes airborne microrganisms, fumes, vapors, i.e. gases. Respirators range from relatively inexpensive single-use disposable face masks. They also offer more robust reusable models with replaceable cartridges and are used by the military, private industry and the public.
There are two main categories: the air-purifying respirator which forces contaminated air through a filtering element. Air-supplied respirator also which force an alternate supply of fresh air to be delivered. Hence, within each category, different techniques are employed to reduce or eliminate noxious airborne contaminants.
A powered, air-purifying respirator (PAPR) is a type of personal protective equipment used to safeguard workers against contaminated air. PAPRs consist of a respirator in the form of a hood, or full-face mask, which takes ambient air that is contaminated with one or more type of pollutant or pathogen, actively removes (filters) a sufficient proportion of these hazards, and then delivers the clean air to the user’s face and/or mouth. PAPRs are sometimes called positive-pressure masks, blower units, or just blowers.
